Derek Jarman uses a blue screen background that never changes, as well as music, sound effects, and various voices, to try to show the audience what he has gone through with AIDS, along with different interpretations of what the color blue can mean or can convey. Jarman knew while making the film that he was going to pass away, so he made the film in order to look back on his life and its meaning. He provides his thoughts and memories to the audience so that they can listen instead of just watching visuals on the screen. Blue was actually the last color he was able to see before he lost his vision due to the disease. He remains calm even as he faces death.
