WHAT IS PERIODONTAL DISEASE? [Click
HERE for more information]
Periodontal disease is the major cause of about
70% of adult tooth loss, affecting 3 out of 4 persons at some point in
life.
The main cause of gum disease is bacterial plaque, a sticky film that
forms on the teeth.
Poisons produced by the bacterial plaque irritate the gums and can make
them swell and bleed.
Left untreated , the toxins destroy the supporting gums around the
teeth, forming pockets that will fill with plaque.
The surrounding bone holding the teeth in place may also be damaged.
Left untreated , the affected teeth can become loose and may eventually
be lost.
